Who typed each word first, kept per language.
A discovery is the first time anyone plays a word in a language. You are the finder from then on, and nobody can discover that word again in that language.
Every language keeps its own list, so the same spelling can have a different finder in each one.
Discovery, claim and use

| Discovery | Nobody has played the word in this language | You become the finder, and the prompt you played it on stays with the word |
| Claim | The word exists, you have never played it | The word joins your list and its claim count goes up |
| Use | You have played it before | Your use count goes up |
| Elite | A word you found that nobody else has claimed | The label, until someone else claims it |
Where discoveries count
Only these four modes count.

What stops a discovery

| Playing alone | You can claim existing words, never make a new one. Bots and guests are not company. |
| Practice rooms and Spelling Bee | Nothing counts. |
| Bots | Words a bot plays never count. |
| Question and answer prompts | Nothing counts. |
| Blocked words | Offensive words never count. |
| Paused languages | Greek, Ukrainian and Hindi are switched off. |
